Program Overview

The program is derived from the 30 years' history of Library and Information Science education at Nankai University. At the information age, this program helps to create a new educating model to meet the demand in human resources at information-related departments. Graduates in the MLIS program are expected to have strong international visions, work ethics, advanced management ideas, excellent marketing skills and modern information technology skills.

The library and information education of Nankai University began in 1983, which is one of the first universities in China authorized to confer library and information professional degree. The Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) education, relying on abundant faculty and research strength from Business School of Nankai University , is committed to cultivate new-type information professionals (IP) with interdisciplinary practical ability under the global economy and business environment. With this as the goal, the MLIS program of Nankai Business School will focus on forging high-quality IP, cultivating qualified and compound talents with professional ethics (Ethics), advanced management notions (Management), marketing awareness (Marketing), service strategies and tactics (Service), and contemporary information technology capabilities (IT) for the rapidly changing Chinese society, They are called as EMMS+IT talents for short.

Program Features

   1.First Class faculty

   The MLIS program of Nankai University has a top-level, internationalized and optimal faculty portfolio. Among them, 3 are selected as specially-appointed Professors or Young Scholars by  the Ministry of Education, 1 is selected as a member of New Century Excellent Talents Support Program. 94% have doctor degree; 40% obtained doctor degrees from well-known overseas universities; 80% have at least one year overseas study experience; 63% are under 45 years old. A number of faculty serve as members of the National Steering Committee for Professional  Degree Education on Library and Information, and members of the Academic Degree Evaluation Group for Library, Information and Archives Management  for the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, etc.

2.Diversified curriculum system

The MLIS program of Nankai University provides students with diversified curriculum models. It is characterized as modularization, micro-curriculum, stratification and communitization. Students can choose different modules of courses according to their own  interests and goals, such as library management, competitive intelligence and knowledge management, e-government and document management. Information security management module will be added in 2023. In addition to the stem curriculum system, students can take selective courses with small credit with an aim to broaden their professional vision, thus comprehensively expanding their knowledge scope and developing their practical ability and theoretical accomplishment.

3.Double-tutor System  

The MLIS program of Nankai University is the first MLIS program in China launching double-tutor system. Academic tutors are from MLIS program faculty; Practice tutors come from a wide range of sources, including senior professionals in Library, information, archives, information security and other related fields from domestic and foreign universities, National Library, the Document and Information Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and other well-known domestic library and information institutions. They have rich practical experience and profound professional quality.

In the process of MLIS education, we have established long-term cooperation with overseas well-known scholars from Rutgers State University of New Jersey, University of Illinois, and City University of New York, invited experts from domestic enterprises, libraries, information institutes, and other practical fields to carry out lectures and practical research activities, support MLIS teaching practice, integrate resources in all aspects, and ensure dual improvement of both theoretical level and practical experience for MLIS talents. These play significant role in teaching practice.
